Things You
Should Know About...

Body Language

Body language definitely plays a part in the way we communicate with each other. What kind of cues are you giving others through your non-verbal communication? I asked myself this question. I fold my arms a lot because I am cold. Folding of the arms can communicate:

1. A defense against the person you are talking to
2. An attempt to make yourself smaller
3. That you are shutting the person out
4. A comfortable position (if relaxed and not stiff)

I do not want to give people the impression that I don’t want to talk to them, or that I am shutting them out. Sometimes I mention that I am cold and other times I change my posture to something that may appear more welcoming. It all depends on the person and the situation. It is important, when you are conversing, that you are aware of where your arms are and what message you are sending someone.

If I want to let someone know that I am open to them, I should let my arms hang loosely or move smoothly. My palms should be open and relaxed. When I do fold my arms, I should look comfortable and not stiff.

If you want to look friendly and open to someone, have:

   • A broad smile
   • Good eye contact
   • Good posture

   • Physical touches (hugs, little touches on the arm, etc.)

   • Your body turned toward the person when they are talking
