Grandma's Red Velvet Cake
½ c. shortening
1 ½ c. sugar
2 large eggs, room temp
1 c. buttermilk
¼ c. unsweetened cocoa, sifted
1 tsp. baking soda
1 ½ oz. of red food coloring
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 ½ c. cake flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour three 8-inch round pans or two 9-inch pans. Cream together sugar and shortening. Individually beat eggs. Add eggs to mixture one at a time. In a small bowl make cocoa paste with food coloring and cocoa. Add this to cake mixture. Add salt. Add flour slowly, hand stirring one cup at a time. Add vanilla. Slowly add buttermilk and blend well. In a small bowl mix vinegar and baking soda by putting the vinegar in the bowl and sprinkling the baking soda on top. Add this mixture to the cake batter. Stir until well blended. Pour into baking pans.
Bake for 30 minutes or when toothpick comes out clean. Cool.
Frost with
cream cheese frosting
and add candy hearts.
This was a cake that my Grandmother made for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or my birthday. She always made a 3-layer cake and put it on a glass pedestal with a glass dome lid.
