Mentor... Say What?

Lindsay Rae Barnett

Mentorship is something that has changed my life. Mentors are those who have been where you are and who are where you want to eventually be. Mentors can often times see what you can’t in a situation, and can help you to better understand situations you face. The most important part of a mentor is they should love God’s Word more than anything else. This will help you grow in your relationship with God and others.

At first in pursuing a mentor, it might not be the easiest thing, but it is something that will change your life! You might feel the butterflies in your stomach and the nervousness of what to say or do...but then you realize that they are people too.

An important thing to remember is that having a mentor isn’t just about you. Psalm 119:74 (NLT) says that “those who fear God will find joy in you, because you put you hope in God’s word.” As you continue to pursue after God and His Word, you will be a refreshing joy for those who fear God! How cool is that...you can actually be a joy in someone else’s life...just for being you!..It also takes the pressure off of you ☺

Now, here are some tips on how to pursue a mentor:
•    Pray find out who you are supposed to have as a mentor. God will show you if you ask. (Mark 11:24)
•    Posture Yourself - Posture yourself as a servant; never become familiar. (Phil. 2:3-5)
•    Sow – Find out the little detail things your mentor likes & bless them.
•    Ask Questions - Find out how you can grow in the areas they are strong in.
•    Actually Listen & Act what they say - When they share the Word with you, listen, take notes & put it into practice. (James 1:22-25)

Finally, keep in mind that pursuing a mentor isn’t about becoming just like them, but rather growing in who you are in Christ & as you do this you will add so much value to your mentor’s life as well! You are more than worth it! (Read the Book of Ruth & see how she postured herself with her mentor Naomi).
