June 2009 Meditation: God As Our Father

As most of us know, Father’s Day in America is celebrated this month. Some of us have had good fathers who gave us a picture of what our Father God is like. Others have been less fortunate and crave for attention from a man because they never knew the love of a father. No matter what kind of a father we had, God makes us His children when we make Jesus the Lord of our lives. He adopts us into His family and gives us the rights of sons and daughters of God. He chooses to call us His own.

The problem is that many of us have a difficult time understanding the love God has for us. We do not understand because we do not believe or even know God’s character. Some of us think he is a dictator who sits on his throne waiting for us to do something wrong so he can punish us. This is so contrary to our heavenly Father’s character. He is good and He wants His best for us. As a matter of fact, He gave His best for us when He sent Jesus to pay the price for our sins. It was out of the Father’s love for us that He sent Jesus (John 3:16).

Let’s look at some character qualities of our heavenly Father:

Our Father God provides all of our needs, Phil. 4:18.

Our Father God is a father to the fatherless, Psalm 68:5.

Our Father God is merciful, Ps. 103:8.

Our Father God is compassionate, Luke 6:36.

Our Father God tenderly loves us, John 16:27.

Our Father God is patient, 1 Cor. 13:4.

Our Father God is kind, 1 Cor. 13:4.

Our Father God never gives up, 1 Cor. 13:7.

Our Father God endures through every circumstance, 1 Cor. 13:7.

Our Father God never demands his own way, 1 Cor. 13:5.

Our Father God is never touchy or irritable, 1 Cor. 13:5.

Our Father God is always with us, Heb. 13:5.

Our Father God is joyful, Gal. 5:22.

Our Father God is peaceful, Gal. 5:22.

Our Father God is good, Ps. 100:5.

Our Father God is faithful, Gal. 5:22.

Our Father God is gentle, Gal. 5:23.

Our Father God is benevolent, Gal. 5:22.

Our Father God has self-control, Gal. 5:23.

Our Father God is love, 1 John 4:8, 16.

There are so many more character qualities that could be listed. We should all take time to meditate on who God really is. As we do, healing will take place in our lives and growth in our relationship with our heavenly Father. Remember, the Father Himself tenderly loves you.

Be blessed.
