Meditation: What A Delight!
“School
days, School days, Dear old golden rule days….” This was a song we used
to sing when I was a girl. It seems we are so far removed from the
“golden rule”. The “golden rule” when I was a girl was based on the Ten
Commandments. Today we have taken the 10 Commandments out of our
schools and many public places. It seems people think that these rules
are unnecessary and they infringe on people’s rights. The problem is
that without rules chaos exists, without rules people do not know what
to do and it creates bondage.
For example, we have rules that
teach us math. We know that 2 plus 2 equals 4. If there was not a rule
for addition, we could say 2 plus 2 equals whatever we felt like it
should. Traffic laws are another example. Without traffic laws I could
go through a red light any time I felt like it. The only problem is I
would probably have an accident or cause one. My
freedom to not obey the law would put someone else in bondage.
Let’s relate this to our
Christianity….
Psalm 1 begins with “Blessed
is
the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in
the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful, but his
delight is in the law of the Lord….” The Psalm goes on to declare
how blessed and prosperous a person is who delights in God’s law. There
are many scriptures that proclaim this.
Satan does everything he can to get our
thoughts off of God’s law. He knows if he can, we will be in
bondage to him. Our actions will follow our thoughts and destruction
will come our way. God’s law promises us life, health
and prosperity as we delight in it. This
does not mean we sit around and read our bible all day. It means we act
on God’s Word, as well as hear it or read it. Delighting in it means it
becomes our thought life. It is the rule by which we govern our lives.
It is delightful to us because we are pleasing our Heavenly Father. In
getting us to disdain God’s Word our actions become ones that please
Satan, not our Father.
Just like when we are in school, learning
rules and trying to apply them seem boring. We get frustrated with the
learning and applying. Especially when we are first learning something,
we get frustrated with the continual repetition of it. We would prefer
to just do our own thing. It doesn’t get us anywhere. How many of us
wish we had spent more time learning our multiplication tables so we
did not have to rely upon a calculator...
As
we spend time in God’s Word and acting upon it, we wield more power
over our enemy. We experience more victories in our life. We are happy
because we are pleasing our Heavenly Father. This month I want to
encourage you to think about what a delight God’s Word is. You’ll be
glad you did.
