Monthly Meditation:
Fear of the Lord
Proverbs 31:30 says, “…a woman who fears the Lord shall be greatly praised.” (NLT)
This
statement is the basis for being a virtuous woman. Oftentimes, we get
caught up in the doing of all this amazing woman accomplished, but there
was only one reason she was so incredible! It was completely based on
her walk with God. The problem is that most of us do not understand or
focus on being a person who “fears the Lord.” I cannot even just touch
the tip of the iceberg concerning this topic. It is a huge topic, but
hopefully, we can come to a better understanding of it and grow thereby.
To
fear the Lord can be expressed different ways. Some translations use
the words “honor, respect, reverence”. In today’s vernacular, perhaps
this gives us a better picture. The fear of the Lord has to do with the
worship of God, standing in awe of God, respecting, revering, venerating
the Lord.
To be in awe of someone or something is “a
feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder”. Some synonyms
are “ wonder, wonderment, admiration, reverence, respect, esteem,
dread, fear.
I have to ask myself if I really fear God,
“Would I react negatively, Would I do things I shouldn’t do?” the answer
to the question is “NO”.
When I truly am walking in
reverence of the Lord, I do what pleases him. Think about something or
someone you really respect. How would you act toward them (it)? Would
you deface it? Would you treat them (it) wrong? Would you take care of
them (it)? Would you be loving, kind, thoughtful……? Would you do what
pleases them?
I believe we must keep the thought of fearing
the Lord in our minds at all times. We must make ourselves think about
the wonder of God, the awesomeness of who He is and what He has done in
our lives. As we do, we will genuinely fear Him and our actions will
line up with what that means.
Fearing the Lord also has to do with trusting Him.
As Christians we all say we trust Him, but if we are honest with
ourselves, we know that is not the case in many situations. Most of the
time we rely on our own understanding. This is very interesting since
with the “Fear of the Lord” comes understanding, wisdom and knowledge.
When we rely on Him, we do not need our understanding.
I hope
the confessions this month help you meditate on the fear of the Lord
and given you a better understanding of what that means so that it will
be more evident that you are the virtuous woman of God He created you to
be in Christ.
